Evergreen Azaleas

One of the most beloved landscape plants, Azaleas are actually a form of Rhododendron. Although these plants are evergreen a portion of the leaves will drop only to be replaced the following spring. Early to late spring brings a profusion of flowers in an array of colors. Plant in moist, acidic, well-drained, organic-rich soil in full sun to part shade.

Kalmia / Mountain Laurel

A beautiful native broadleaf evergreen that is prized for its unique flowers. A relative of Rhododendron, Mt. Laurel is best sited in part shade with soil that is moist but well-drained and very organic in nature. Used for naturalizing and wonderful if planted in groups. Different sizes and flower colors are available.

Rhododendron

Known as the Cadillac of woody ornamentals, Rhododendron is one of the most popular and best loved plants. Glossy green leaves remain effective all year and beautiful large trusses of flowers are true harbingers of late spring and early summer. Flowers are available in an array of colors and mature sizes vary with variety. Rhodies, as they are affectionately called, prefer moist, well- drained, acidic, organic-rich soil in part-sun to shade.

PJM (Small Leaf) Rhododendron Varieties

 

Named for it’s hybridizer Peter J. Mezitt, an early flowering Rhododendron having lavender-pink blooms in late April through early May. Leaves are smaller than most other hybrid Rhododendron.

 

Rhododendron P.J.M. P.J.M. RHODODENDRON

3-6 ft. (Zone 4) Named for it’s hybridizer Peter J. Mezitt, an early flowering Rhododendron having lavender-pink blooms in late April through early May. Leaves are smaller than most other hybrid Rhododendron. Summer foliage is dark green taking on a purplish cast in fall through winter. Very hardy.

Rhododendron P.J.M. ‘Aglo’ AGLO P.J.M. RHODODENDRON

3-6 ft. (Zone 3) This hardy Mezitt hybrid of ‘P.J.M.’ has beautiful clear pink blossoms in mid to late April. Foliage is green turning some shades of red in fall. Very similar to PJM ‘Olga’.

Rhododendron ‘P.J.M. Compacta’ COMPACT P.J.M. RHODODENDRON

3-6 ft. (Zone 4) Named for it’s hybridizer Peter J. Mezitt, an early flowering Rhododendron having lavender-pink blooms in late April through early May. Leaves are smaller than most other hybrid Rhododendron. Summer foliage is dark green taking on a purplish cast in fall through winter. Very hardy. Very similar to P.J.M. and Elite rhododendron. Plant habit is slightly denser.

3-6 ft. (Zone 4) A vigorous upright growing variety of PJM with a little pinker flower. Blooms just prior or at the same time as the parent plant. Very much the same appearance as regular P.J.M.

 

Rhododendron PJM ‘Northern Starburst’  -  NORTHERN STARBURST PJM RHODODENDRON

4-5 ft. (Zone 4) An early bloomer with strong stems. Flowers are pink and of greater substance than original P.J.M. Leaves are somewhat thicker and turn cinnamon colored in the fall.

 

Rhododendron P.J.M. ‘Olga’  -  OLGA P.J.M. RHODODENDRON

4-6 ft. (Zone 4) This hardy Mezitt hybrid of ‘P.J.M.’ has excellent bright pink blooms. Foliage is green turning some shades of red in fall. Very similar to PJM ‘Aglo’.
