Ground Covers
Aegopodium podograria 'Variegatum' SNOW-ON-THE-MOUNTAIN or GOUTWEED or BISHOP'S WEED 6-12 in. (Zone 3) Versatile, fast growing ground cover that is useful where little else will grow, in sun or shade, rich or poor soil. Leaves are green with silver margins.
Ajuga reptans ‘Varieties’ CARPET BUGLE 2-6 in. (Zone 4) Low growing semi-evergreen foliage with blue flower spikes in May through early summer. Prefers partial shade. Does well in sunny area if soil is kept from drying out. Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’ - Foliage is green, creamy white and pink tricolor.
Arcotostaphylos - See FLOWERING SHRUBS BEARBERRY Cerastium tomentosum ‘Yo Yo’ SNOW-IN-SUMMER 6-8 in. (Zone 3) Gray, wooly foliage topped with white flowers in May and June. Easy care, easy to maintain groundcover for full sun and poor soils. This variety is more restrained than other species. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Ceratosigma plumbaginoides PLUMBAGO or BLUE LEADWORT 6-12 in. (Zone 5) Late summer flowering herbaceous perennial. Does well in sun or partial shade. Flowers are electric-blue. Foliage is green turning red in fall.
Convallaria majalis LILLY-OF-THE-VALLEY 6-8 in. (Zone 1-7) One of the best shade-loving ground covers. Attractive, leafy foliage forms a lush green carpet very quickly. Lovely, fragrant bell- shaped white flowers in early spring. Plant 6-8 in. apart.

Galium odorata (Formerly Asperula ordata) SWEET WOODRUFF 6-9 in. (Zone 3) A spreading groundcover with fresh green whorled leaves and fragrant white flowers in May. Plant is typically evergreen with new growth starting early in spring. Prefers part-shade to shade in well-drained soil.
G enista pilosa ‘Vancouver Gold’ VANCOUVER GOLD WOADWAXEN6-12 in. (Zone 5) Excellent low growing variety for ground cover or bank plantings. Flowers are golden-yellow, pea-like, and appear in spring. Grows well in poor, dry soil areas. Full sun.
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ (P.P.No.12175) ROZANNE CRANESBILL 12-15 in. (Zone 5) Beautiful large free-flowering violet-blue flowers from mid- June to October. The low growing foliage is dark green that turns red in fall. Longest and the most profuse blooming geranium we grow.
Geranium TINY MONSTER 15 in. (Zone 4-8)A hybrid of geranium sanguineum x psilostemon. A quick spreader and excellent ground cover. 1 inch purple-violet flowers appear 4-6 inches above the mounded ,finely-cut foliage. Very long blooming.
Hedera helix ‘Thorndale’ THORNDALE ENGLISH IVY 6-8 in. (Zone 5) Smaller leaved and lower growing than H. helix. Evergreen foliage is a rich, glossy dark green. Grows well in sun or shade. Popular and very hardy.
Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon' CHAMELEON HOUTTUYNIA 6 in. (Zone 5) Low growing ground cover with variegated, multi-colored foliage. Spreads quickly. Plant in full sun for best color but does well in partial shade.
Hypericum calcynum ST. JOHN'S WORT HYPERICUM 8-10 in. (Zone 5) Flowers from July through September with 2" yellow blooms. Foliage is semi-evergreen in protected locations or with adequate snow coverage. Does well in most any location.
Iberis sempervirens ‘Snowflake’ SNOWFLAKE PERENNIAL CANDYTUFT 8 in. (Zone 4) Dwarf evergreen plant with a mounding growth habit with stout leaves and consistent height. Plants are completely covered with lace-like pure white flowers in May. Very useful as a ground cover or in rock gardens and borders. Best in sun, will tolerate some shade.
