6-12 in. (Zone 3) Versatile, fast growing almost invasive ground cover that is useful where little else will grow, in sun or shade, rich or poor soil. Leaves are green with silver margins.

Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’ BURGUNDY GLOW AJUGA

(Zone 4) Foliage is green, creamy white and pink tricolor. Low and fast growing semi-evergreen foliage with blue flower spikes in May through early summer. Prefers partial shade. Does well in sunny area is soil is kept from drying out. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies and is also deer resistant.

Alchemilla mollis LADY’S MANTLE

12-18 in. (Zone 3) Low perennial for shady areas. Large, rounded or lobed leaves are grayish, light green and deer and rabbit resistant. Green or yellow clusters of petal-less blossoms in spring that are good for cutting and drying. Great for texture change in the landscape.

Andromeda Polifolia ‘Blue ice’ BOG ANDROMEDA/ROSEMARY  

12 in. (Zone 2) A low growing mounding evergreen plant with stiff steel blue leaves. White urn-shaped flowers are tinged with pink and appear in clusters in May. Plant in moist organic soil in part shade to full sun.

Anemone hupehensis   JAPANESE ANEMONE / WINDFLOWER

Armeria maritima ‘Armada rose’ ARMADA ROSE SEA THRIFT

6-8 in. (Zone 4) Deep red globe flowers above evergreen grass-like tufts in May and June. Will re-bloom if deadheaded. Native to the coastlines where few other plants can handle high salt concentrations.

6-10 in. (Zone 4) Soft to touch fine-textured silvery foliage forming a dense mounded shape. Does best in sunny, well-drained location. Excellent rock garden or border plant. Intensifies flower colors of annuals and perennials. Best trimmed in mid to late summer to remove seed heads. Deer and rabbit resistant.

Asters ‘Varietes’

    (zones 3-8) Fall would not seem complete without the colorful blossoms of asters. Great substitution for those mums that never come back, these will come back and no pruning required. Easy care, hardy, attracts butterflies, grows in most soils, and is good for cutting. Requires full sun to part shade.

    (Zone 4) Perhaps the finest and choicest foliage perennial we have to offer. Stems with glossy-green leaves appear in May. Long-lasting feathery flowers bloom in June and continue through July.     (Zone 3) This genus includes some of the longest summer bloomers. Brilliant daisy-like flowers in summer for natural of filler plantings. Best in well-drained soil with full to part sun. Dianthus ‘Varieties’  PINKS

    While doing well in rock gardens or as edging, most varieties are low growing mat-forming plants that are deer resistant. Most flowers are about the size of a quarter and bloom most all summer long. They got their name pinks because the flowers are normally serrated as if trimmed with pinking shears. The flowers, attract butterflies, are good for cutting or drying, and are normally fragrant.

Ferns

Hosta / Plantain Lily

 

One of the most popular perennial plants, there's a home for a Hosta in almost any landscape. These plants are used mostly for their foliage, and are available in many different colors and variegations. Trumpet-shaped flowers appear on stalks in summer, usually in colors of white or lavender, and are attracting to hummingbirds. Hostas will grow almost anywhere but prefer moist, rich, well-drained soil in partial shade.
