(Zone 4) Perhaps the finest and choicest foliage perennial we have to offer. Stems with glossy-green leaves appear in May. Long-lasting feathery flowers bloom in June and continue through July. Coreopsis ‘Varieties’ COREOPSIS or TICKSEED

(Zone 3) This genus includes some of the longest summer bloomers. Brilliant daisy-like flowers in summer for natural of filler plantings. Best in well-drained soil with full to part sun. Deadheading is needed on some varieties for continued blooms.

 

Coreopsis ‘American Dream’ - Rose-pink flowers with yellow centers are borne in June-September. Blooms profusely and are excellent for cut flowers. Full sun. (18 in.) Zone 5

(Zone 3) Colorful, elegant flower spikes rise above clumps of divided, lobed foliage. Best in deep, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Trim off fading flowers to encourage more blooms from lower stems. May need staking.

We try to keep a selection of hardy ferns throughout the landscape season. Most ferns require moist organic-rich soil in shade to part shade, although some will tolerate other extremes. Ferns can be invaluable in the landscape for a natural feeling.

2-6 ft. (Zone 2) This fern has medium green plume-like fronds. Fertile fronds are shorter and will become woody and brown in fall. Spores are released in winter or early spring. Habit is erect to short spreading. Plant in part shade, but will tolerate sun if soil is moist. This native fern will grow in wet soil if planted high.

Osmunda cinnamomea CINNAMON FERN

2-5 ft. (Zone 2) Bright cinnamon-colored fertile fronds in spring with bright green infertile fronds that remain all season. Habit is compact to short spreading. This robust native fern tolerates sun and wet soil, but grows best in part shade.

Osmunda regalis ROYAL FERN

2-5 ft. (Zone 2) A very beautiful fern with green fronds that resemble the leaves on Honeylocust. Habit is compact with upright arching fronds. One of the best ferns for tolerating sun and wet soil. Excellent when planted near water.

Polystichum acrostichoides CHRISTMAS FERN

1-2 ft. (Zone 3) A very common native fern with upright arching dark green fronds. Habit is compact to slow spreading. Leathery foliage is evergreen with new fronds emerging each spring. Plant prefers shade to part shade in moist organic-rich soil, but is one of the best for dry rocky sites. Do not plant in wet soils.

Hosta / Plantain Lily

 

One of the most popular perennial plants, there's a home for a Hosta in almost any landscape. These plants are used mostly for their foliage, and are available in many different colors and variegations. Trumpet-shaped flowers appear on stalks in summer, usually in colors of white or lavender, and are attracting to hummingbirds. Hostas will grow almost anywhere but prefer moist, rich, well-drained soil in partial shade.
