Berberis mentorensis MENTOR BARBERRY

6 ft. (Zone 5) A cross between B. julianae and B. thunbergii. Dark green, well defined leaves, semi-evergreen foliage. Heavily thorned. Will stand extreme heat, cold, sun, shade, or drought. Dark red berries hold well into the winter. Excellent barrier plant.

Buddleia / Butterfly Bush

4-6 ft. (Zone 5) A vigorous growing, multi-stem plant for the perennial border. A fast growing upright shrub with somewhat arching branches and green leaves. May freeze to the ground in northern areas but will grow back and flower that year. Very soil tolerant and prefers full sun. Late summer brings long cone shaped panicles of flowers in an array of colors. Great for butterflies.

8-12 ft. (Zone 5) One of the few late summer blooming shrubs. Dense upright growth habit. Use as a specimen or in borders, also very popular for hedging. Flowers best in full sun. Also called Althea, deciduous shrub with an upright vase-shaped growth habit. Flowers are available in many colors and appear in late summer, heavy bloomer. Very soil tolerant and does best in full sun, but will grow in some shade. Great in borders or as a screen or hedge.

Hydrangea / Hortensia Flower Types

Hydrangeas with hortensia or mophead type flowers have sterile petals in large globose corymbs. Flower color varies by variety and by soil ph. Acidic ph for blue color (ie adding garden sulfur), alkaline ph for pink (ie adding lime). Plant in part-shade to part-sun in well-drained organic soil. Flower buds form on previous years stems. Bloom in summer.
